About this place
Some diners return to Gionya on every trip to Kyoto, and the herring soba is a dish that makes an impression. People who have tried it praise the seasoning of the soba, with some describing it as a flavour they would happily eat again. Some set meals are recorded as coming with chirimen rice and pickles, giving you the choice of a soba-focused lunch or a more substantial meal with rice on the side.
For cold noodles, mori soba and tempura-zaru soba are among the options. One diner who ordered mori soba noted the pairing of the thin, springy noodles with the dipping sauce, as well as the sobayu served at the end of the meal. It offers a different experience from a bowl of hot herring soba.
If you would rather have something other than soba, there is katsu-don, topped with egg, and oyako-don, with chicken and egg. A visitor who tried the katsu-don reported that it came with plenty of egg; the oyako-don was also ordered at the same meal, though the diner found the portion of chicken modest. The restaurant is open from 11 to 15 and is closed on Wednesdays. Payment is cash only, so it is worth bringing cash before you go.
